Borth Millennium Sea Wall Mosaic
|
| In
1998 a community project was proposed to create a series of ceramic
mosaics upon Borth's concrete sea wall. The idea was raised during an
open discussion about what Borth might do to commemorate the
Millennium. Borth's Community Council had been made aware of
Ceredigion grants that were available and wanted to pursue the issue.
It was quickly established that such an undertaking was possible and
that it was an acceptable idea. Six Local community groups were
identified and approached wit regard to their possible paticipation
and all six responded with immediate enthusiasm. These groups were: Borth Senior Citizens,
Borth W.I.,
Welcome Club (Clwb Croeso), Borth,
Borth School (Ysgol Craig-yr-Wylfa),
2nd Borth Scout Group &
Gwerin y Coed (Borth Elfins). |
|
It
was obvious from the start that the project would galvanize many
community groups and individual members of the local community. After
success with the initial grant application it became clear that in
order to produce a series of mosaics it was not going to be enough so
Borth Community Council quickly doubled the account. Since then over
£10,200 has been raised and more groups including Ysgol Feithrin,
parents, teenagers, family groups and the Countryside Council for
Wales, Ynyslas Information Centre have involved themselves with
this project. |
| Suitable community artists living
in Wales were considered and Pod Clare was the unanimous choice for
this project. It was her task to co-ordinate all working groups and
ensure that a consistent style and quality be maintained within each
of the separate mosaics. Lists of historical events, legends, natural
history and local themes that were significant to Borth and its
environs were compiled. These subjects were short-listed and chosen by
the groups to be depicted as a broken time-line along the sea wall .
In the future, if the project were ever extended, a broken time-line
allows the possibility of adding subjects that were not chosen or
hitherto unknown. |

During the Millennium year
2000-2001 over 370 enthusiastic people from all sections of Borth's
lively community, including summer visitors, spent happy hours participating
in this project, the youngest being two, the eldest ninety three. From
conception to final [positioning upon the se wall there have been
positive reactions, this has been a community project to be proud of. |
